Firearm Home Safety Certificate
Firearm safety is the law in California. Every firearm owner should understand and follow safety practices, have a basic familiarity with the operation and handling of their firearm, and be fully aware of the responsibilities of firearm ownership. According to Penal Code section 26840, any person acquiring a firearm must have a Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC), unless statutorily exempt from this requirement.
To obtain a Firearm Safety Certificate, you must pass a written examination on firearm safety administered by the Department of Justice. Upon passing the examination, you are also required to perform a safe handling demonstration. Before taking delivery of a firearm, you must successfully perform this demonstration when the firearm is purchased or acquired. This demonstration must be performed in the presence of a DOJ Certified Firearms Instructor between the submission date of the DROS to the Department of Justice and the delivery of the firearm. Both the firearm purchaser and the certified firearms instructor must sign a sworn declaration stating that the safe handling demonstration was completed.
Before contacting our office for the written examination, please visit the Department of Justice website and review the Firearm Home Safety study guide. REMEMBER: Ignorance and carelessness can result in firearm accidents. Basic gun safety rules must always be applied.
