HR 218 Certification
Law Enforcemnet Officer Safety Act (Leosa) Hr 218
On July 22, 2004, the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004, commonly known as "HR 218," became law. This federal law allows a Qualified Retired Law Enforcement Officer with identification that meets specified criteria to carry a concealed firearm anywhere in the nation, notwithstanding most state and local laws that restrict the possession of concealed weapons.
To be considered a Qualified Retired Law Enforcement Officer under HR 218, you must:
Be retired in good standing from your employment agency (other than for reasons of mental instability).
Have been authorized to perform specified law enforcement functions and held a position granting powers of arrest by statute.
Have been regularly employed as a law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 10 years or more before retirement or have retired from service with your agency.
One significant modification to HR 218 involves firearms qualification for officers now referred to as having been "separated from service." The 2004 law required that to be a "qualified retired" officer, one must show proof that they have met, within the past 12 months, the standards required of active law enforcement officers by their agency or met the state standards established by the state in which they reside.
Prestigious Investigative Firearms Training Facility is certified by the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services to conduct firearms qualifications for Qualified Retired Law Enforcement Officers.
Upon completion of your firearms qualification, you will be issued a photo ID. This ID will indicate that you are authorized to carry a concealed weapon as permitted by C.P.C. 1207 and that you have met the requirements as a 'Qualified Retired Law Enforcement Officer,' pursuant to U.S. Title 18, 44 USC 926C.
